10 Days Uganda Primate Safari

10 Days Uganda Primate Safari

10 days that gather Uganda's defining encounters into one unhurried journey, from our two closest relatives to big game, birdlife and living culture. It opens on the water around Lake Victoria, with rescued chimpanzees on Ngamba Island and the prehistoric shoebill stork in the Mabamba wetlands, before turning west to the rainforest of Kibale, the primate capital of East Africa.

From there the journey moves through Queen Elizabeth National Park for game drives across the Kasenyi plains and a cruise on the wildlife-thronged Kazinga Channel, then south to the famous tree-climbing lions of Ishasha and on to the centrepiece, an hour with a mountain gorilla family in the ancient forest of Bwindi. For the timing that suits you best, see our guide to gorilla trekking, and explore the parks in more depth in the Uganda destination guide.

Day 2

Ngamba Island Chimpanzees and Mabamba Birding

Begin on the water with a boat excursion to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, home to rescued orphaned chimpanzees, where you observe these remarkable primates in a protected forest setting and learn about the conservation work behind it. Later you continue to the Mabamba wetlands for a private birding excursion through papyrus channels in search of the elusive shoebill stork and a wealth of other water birds.
Day 3

Scenic Transfer to Kibale National Park

After breakfast you set out westward through Uganda's beautiful countryside, passing tea plantations, rolling hills and rural communities en route to Kibale National Park, renowned as the primate capital of East Africa. You arrive in time to settle in and enjoy the forest surroundings at leisure.
